Rainy days in England does not have to be a bore! There are so many things to do even when the weather forecast tells you that it will rain nonstop outside!
Why are there so many rainy days in England?
I did some research and found that there are certain areas in England that get the most rain. The Met Office said that most of the wettest areas in the UK are those that are in the mountainous regions. These include Northwest England (Lake District), Western and central Wales (Snowdonia region), Southwest England (Dartmoor, Exmoor, and Bodmin moor), and other parts of Northern Ireland. If you notice, most of these areas have a couple of things in common – high elevation and are either in the northern or western sections of the UK. You can blame the Atlantic for the frontal rain happening in the west. As it moves towards the east, the rain dissipates because the heavy clouds are unable to move over the high mountains.
I never really thought about it that way before. So next time I make plans to go hiking somewhere, I need to check where it is exactly. It might be fun to hike during rainy days in England but it can also be very challenging. I need to equip myself well – or reschedule.
Outdoor activities for rainy days in England
Does that mean I stay indoors when it rains in England? Of course not! I am one of those who does not mind getting wet. But I do make sure I wear the proper shoes – the ones with best grip and friction in the soles so I do not slip. I also wear a cap so the rain does not get into my eyes while I run. Of course, a waterproof jacket is a must.So what do I do? I run. I walk. When the rain is light I go biking. I usually put off hiking and trekking for a sunny day. But I have tried hiking in the rain. I wouldn’t advise doing it – most especially when you are alone. One bad slip can make things really tough so you might want to postpone it if you can.
Believe it or not, my friends and I have tried camping in the rain. It was fun during the day but when night time fell, it was not so pleasant. We didn’t get enough sleep. It was still fun. But we all agreed never to do it again.
While you can still be adventurous during rainy days in England, make sure it is done with caution. Visibility will be compromised so you have to be very careful.
